Why do we produce in Canada?
There are so many reasons why we produce in Canada, ranging from quality control to necessity, to ethical considerations. But in short, it really just makes sense for us. With everything being made here, we have total control over the process and can deliver great, high-quality pieces in even the smallest batches. Secondly, we’re obviously not a massive corporation. Doing everything in Canada gives us flexibility and simplifies the whole process. Lastly, although we try to keep it somewhat subtle, our Canadian background is ingrained in a lot of our products. For us, this means it's only natural to rely upon other Canadians to be a part of the process.
However, this isn’t to say we won’t be collaborating with some great companies in the U.S or other parts of the world for certain one-off products. The most important part for us is that we will be able to produce great high-quality pieces with companies that hold values similar to ours. If that happens, we promise we’ll be upfront with where it was produced!
What does “Made in Canada” really mean?
Unfortunately, it's no secret that some companies mislead their customers into believing their garments are made in Canada simply for marketing reasons. For us, transparency is of the most importance. What made in Canada means for us is that our products are designed, sewn, packaged etc. in Canada, some of the materials that are used in the process have been imported to Canada. Simply put, we use some imported materials to increase our selection and deliver the highest value we can to you.
Is anything you make not made in Canada?
Currently some of our packaging materials are manufactured in the U.S.A, so our poly bags, stickers, packaging tape, and things of that nature are coming from our neighbours to the south.
Why do Howard and Lloyd pieces cost as much as they do?
From day one, the mantra of Howard and Lloyd was to never cut corners with our products. We started out making cut-and-sew clothes so that we would have great pieces for ourselves and we figured anything above that would be a bonus. With that approach, however, comes greater expenses. Our limited-run model of small production runs that won’t be repeated is central to our operation, as we want to constantly deliver unique pieces. While the approach is unique, it does cost more to do, and with our products being made in Canada, we incur higher costs for many of our processes. However, included with your purchase is the knowledge that you’re supporting high-quality, unique, and ethically produced apparel, along with local businesses.
