Why do we manufacture in Canada?
There are so many reasons why we manufacture the bulk of our products in Canada, ranging from quality control to necessity, to ethical considerations. But in short, it really just makes sense for us. With most of our products being made here, we have total control over the process and can deliver great, high-quality pieces in small batches.
Secondly, we’re obviously not a massive corporation so creating our products in Canada gives us flexibility and simplifies the whole process.
All this isn’t to say we don't manufacture any products in the U.S or other parts of the world. The most important part for us is that we produce high-quality pieces, and sometimes that means looking outside our backyard for partners that can bring those pieces to life.
What does “Made in Canada” really mean?
It's no secret that for years companies have been using language to lead their customers into believing their garments are more of a product of Canada than they really are. For us, transparency is of the most importance. For H&L made in Canada means that our products are designed, sewn, packaged etc. in Canada, some of the materials that are used in the process have been imported to Canada to increase our selection and deliver the highest quality we can to you.
Is anything you make not made in Canada?
Our biggest goal is providing premium quality products, and at times that means going outside of Canada to create a product. We don't have a hard and fast rule for what % of our products are made in Canada, but it's usually floating around 75-95%.
Outside of specific products some of our packaging materials are manufactured in the U.S.A, so our poly bags, stickers, packaging tape, and things of that nature are coming from our neighbours to the south.
Why do Howard and Lloyd pieces cost as much as they do?
From day one, the mantra of Howard and Lloyd was to never cut corners with our products. We started out making cut-and-sew clothes so that we would have great pieces for ourselves and we figured anything above that would be a bonus. With that approach, however, comes greater expenses. Small production runs that are also central to our operation, as we want to constantly deliver unique pieces. This approach does come with greater costs, and with most of our products being made in Canada, we incur higher costs at many stages of our product processes. However, included with your purchase is the knowledge that you’re supporting high-quality, unique apparel, along with local businesses.
